Tiny Tots & Preschool (ages 2½ – 3 years)
This class is an introductory level of dance that teaches young children how to explore their own creativity. By nurturing our students, they will learn basic ballet terminology and dance movements. Dancers will be presented with concepts about space, rhythm, coordination and mirroring. In addition to social skills such as; listening, working with others, and building positive relationships by respecting each other. Kinder/Primary (ages 4-5) Classes are designed to introduce children to the art of dance. Students will explore basic ballet/tap positions and terminology with emphasizing rhythm, coordination, balance and flexibility. Classes will allow each student to explore his/her own creative abilities through the use of music, space and movement. Through these classes, students will be exposed to positive interactions with peers, self-discipline, and most of all an enjoyable way of developing and expressing dance movements. Primary 2 (age 6-7) Classes will incorporate both new and previously taught ballet/tap technique. Dancers will work towards developing correct body positions, alignment, posture, and meaningful work habits. Students will utilize ballet/tap dance terminology and will be introduced to basic warm-up activities. These various exercises will be done at the barre, centre, and across the floor. They will also learn in class combinations that will assist them in developing skills in following, leading, memorizing, and performing group pieces. Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Ballet Classes will place an emphasis on developing a dancer’s ability to learn ballet terminology and dance technique. Students will encounter three segments within each ballet class. They will have a ballet warm-up at the barre, dance sequences in the centre of the dance floor, and then corner & floor progressions. This structured routine will enhance the students’ ability to watch, listen, and display various dance sequences with control & precision. It is essential for each dancer to develop proper ballet terminology and technique, whole body coordination, and flexibility. In addition, students will be able to identifying various rhythmic patterns, demonstrate various turn and jump techniques, and develop a strong sense of their individual capabilities. These ballet dance classes will provide discipline, encouragement, and character. Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Tap This form of dance will develop a strong focus on proper tap techniques. All tap levels will be challenged with steps and combinations that will get increasingly more complex. Students will be introduced to concepts such as rhythm, coordination, and producing clear tap sounds. As dancers progress in their class sessions, they will develop a sense of timing and personal style while learning beginner- advanced tap movements. Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Jazz As a ballet-based style of dance, Jazz emphasizes isolations, full body movements, turns and leaps. Dancers will explore movements that are designed to increase body control, coordination, and flexibility. Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Funk/Hip Hop This form of dance requires a lot of physical strength and stamina. Dancers are encouraged to have a good sense of rhythm and beats but previous experience is not necessary to join the dance classes. Each level brings a more difficult arrangement of dance steps that include isolation movements such as “popping”, “locking”, “breaking”, among other self expressive dance combinations. Speed, precision, and clarity of movement are very important factors in this dance form (students’ considering entering into a more advanced dance class will ultimately be assessed by dance academy staff and director.) Praise-r-cise This is an adult dance class which offers a high energy, calorie burning environment for beginner dancers. This class is for those who are interested in both fitness and health and want to explore and express their love for dance. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner dancer or more seasoned mover; this class was designed to develop each student’s range of motion, flexibility, building healthier lifestyles, and acknowledging positive eating and work habits. This interactive dance class is an easy going, non-competitive movement class which improves emotional well-being by relieving stress, and improves social skills by providing an opportunity to interact with people. This environment will provide encouragement, confidence, and intellectual stimulation for everyone. Modern Dance In this class, students discover a more relaxed, free style of dance, which is rooted in ballet. There is a strong emphasis on being able to use dance movement to portray emotions and moods. Basic ballet concepts should be known before entering into this dance class. It is important that every student has the basic knowledge and understanding of proper body placement and dance terminology. Speed, precision, concentration, and intent of movement are firmly applied. Modern dance incorporates leaps, turns, lifts, and partnering in its choreography. Student involvement in modern dance will increase strength, endurance, and commitment to each dance movement. As dancers are introduced to various movement combinations within their dance class, they also have opportunities to develop their own sense of style by creating their own dance steps. African Dance African dance can often be characterized by mimicking movements that we use in our daily lives, animals, natural phenomena, in addition to passing down traditional dances over generations. In this dance class, students will learn how to pick up traditional and nontraditional African dances. Dancers should have a good sense of rhythm and beats before entering into this dance class but previous experience is not necessary to join. Since this is a high energy dance class, which requires a lot of physical strength and stamina, students are often encouraged to come prepared with a bottle of water and a towel. Emphasis is placed on clarity of movement, but is also placed on how well each dancer can make each movement their own. This form of dance will increase endurance, memorization, and is an effective way to achieve aerobic fitness, health and quality of life. Junior Ministry (Jazz/Lyrical 3) (ages 10-13) In this class, students will explore utilizing proper dance technique and terminology, from every style of dance to demonstrate their ability to express and communicate worship through movement. Classes will place emphasis on producing well rounded dancers, who have the potential of creating and performing large group pieces in church services. It is essential that all dancers are provided with the basic concepts of what it means to be a minister through the art of dance, and develop a deeper understanding about the word. Classes will place emphasis on concentration, precision, clarity of movement, and preparing the students to be active and effective dancers. Missions Dance Troupe (Lyrical/Jazz 4-5) MDT is a new dance class that we have developed that encourages students to utilize all styles of dance to create wholesome choreographic works for in service, special performances and outreach events. This class will study basic choreography techniques which place an emphasis on employing original movements, executing a high level of dance technique and complex movement combinations, developing sensitivity to musical phrasing, assessing and self-evaluating their works to improve performance. Students must demonstrate a strong focus, commitment to individual and group projects, and be present and prepared for all dance classes. Students will also be provided with the opportunity to attend various dance performances in the city and on Long Island and to choreograph solos/specials for Upper Room Christian Dance Academy’s annual holiday performance and end of the year dance recital.
